As we know, water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Contrary to popular belief, wind chill does not affect the surface temperature; however, wind does often cause convectional heat loss around an item, like an exposed water pipe that leads into a home or business, so in a way wind does cause things to freeze.

Now is the time to do a visual inspection around your home or business to ensure that water pipes leading in are well insulated. If you reside on a crawlspace check the insulation around inlet pipes and make sure they’re wrapped. If there is any danger of them freezing use heat tape to ensure they won’t freeze. While you’re inspecting it’s not a bad idea to carry a can or two of foam sealant to seal openings around pipes and wires too.

We at Rendall’s hope you never have a broken pipe or flood, but sometimes even after careful preparation accidents still happen. Insulation falls off, the heat tape plug gets jostled loose, or you missed a spot which results in a frozen pipe.

If you notice a pipe is frozen shut off the water supply and gradually warm up the pipe, if possible. After a few minutes of warming it up slowly turn the water back on and check to see if it’s still frozen. If not and with a little luck the pipe will not be cracked and you’ll be back in business.

If it is cracked and is leaking water it’s best to call a plumber right away to get it repaired and then call us immediately thereafter. Shutting off the water supply for too long may cause pipes to freeze in other places so it’s best to get it checked out ASAP. If the water has infiltrated your basement, home, or crawlspace, it needs to be dried as soon as possible so it doesn’t cause secondary damage like bacteria/mold growth, odors, and rot.

Puffback soot can range from light to heavy and may come across as dust with a gray tint. You may notice soot webs that look like cobwebs, but much darker and they may have a strong oil smell. If wiped, the soot webs will often leave an oily mark behind. Due to the acidity of soot, leaving soot on your walls, furniture, and belongings for a period of time could cause greater damage and could result in more expensive insurance clams and extensive clean-ups, not to mention the risk of permanent damage to high value, one-of-a-kind items like antiques and heirlooms.
