A furnace puffback occurs when an oil furnace malfunctions. This happens when oil is ignited and a combustion occurs in the firebox of your furnace.  It’s often caused by a cracked heat exchange unit within the furnace itself. Smoke will often fill the rooms of your home and could leave a layer of soot on your walls, ceiling, furniture, and belongings.

Puffback soot can range from light to heavy and may come across as dust with a gray tint. You may notice soot webs that look like cobwebs, but much darker and they may have a strong oil smell. If wiped, the soot webs will often leave an oily mark behind. Due to the acidity of soot, leaving soot on your walls, furniture, and belongings for a period of time could cause greater damage and could result in more expensive insurance clams and extensive clean-ups, not to mention the risk of permanent damage to high value, one-of-a-kind items like antiques and heirlooms.

When it comes to cleaning, including soot puffbacks, Rendall’s Certified Cleaning Services provides our customers with the highest quality craftsmanship in all of Livingston County and surrounding areas.  We use all the professional tools and solutions needed to properly remove soot from your home and belongings.  A smoke sponge is one of the most effective tools used to remove soot from walls, ceilings,  furniture, and fixtures.  A smoke sponge will usually absorb much of the oily soot from the contaminated surface or item; however on extremely contaminated items and structural materials will also need to be washed and possibly repainted.
